This ironstone village originated in the Saxon period. St. Mary’s Church dates from the 14th century and is reputed to have the tallest spire (198ft) in Oxfordshire. Several other medieval buildings survive and the village has a maze of ancient winding lanes with frontages of early buildings along them. As shown in the Bloxham Museum, the wool trade was very important
in Bloxham, with weavers working their own cottage looms and selling the cloth through
the nearby market in Banbury.
