Details

Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, converted the picture-book buildings of the dissolved Warwick Guilds into a retreat for old soldiers and it has continued to serve that purpose until the present day.

A magnificent range of 14th and 15th century half-timbered buildings adjacent to the ancient West Gate. Originally built for the Guilds of Warwick, taken over by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, in 1571, the Hospital continues to provide homes for ex-servicemen and their wives.

The Brethren, as the inhabitants are known, attend weekday services in the ancient and beautiful chapel over the town's West Gate, which adjoins their home, and they still wear their blue gowns and flat Tudor hats on ceremonial occasions.

As featured in BBC's Doctor Who and David Dimbleby's How We Built Britain. The museum of the West Midlands' cavalry regiment, the Queen's Own Hussars, is also here.

The historic Master's Garden featured in Country Life and on Gardener's World.

Visit the chantry chapel, Guildhall, galleried courtyard and Great Hall.

Refreshments served in the Brethren's Kitchen.
