The derivation of this name form the Saxon is 'Ceol's fortified place' , a section of the Royal Forest - Wychwood Forest which was cleared to form this market town.
In contrast to its many neighbours, Charlbury's propserity is due in the main not to wool and sheep but to glove making.

Some of the most historic houses are in Thames Street, it is known that Armada Cottage and Old Talbot are both late 16th century. The railway station was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
